Names: Paige and Ryan
Wedding Date: November 19, 2018
Location: The County Clerk’s Office in Manhattan
How did the two of you meet?
Paige: My sister did temp work while transitioning to NYC and became good friends with Ryan and a group of guys on their floor. I was in a relationship when I got to know her work friends, but that relationship ended…
Ryan: I worked with Paige’s sister for a couple years by this point, and I met Paige while getting drinks one day after work. She had a boyfriend at the time, but it seemed like things were ending so I stuck around a bit. Shortly after we started seeing each other more.
What was your first date?
Paige: After several casual hangouts, we went to a Knicks basketball game at Madison Square Garden. March 10th, 2014 (the day before Ryan’s birthday), was our first proper date. My sister and their work friend accompanied us!
Ryan: Our first solo date was at Fat Cat in the West Village. Paige is ultracompetitive and naturally thought she could take me in ping-pong. She was right…
How did he pop the question?
Paige: He didn’t, at first (see question #7). Ryan and I had a history of on and off again. When we finally got back together for round three, we knew we never wanted to be apart again. We wanted to make a serious commitment to each other, so we agreed to take the next step toward marriage. For my 31st birthday (August 9th, 2017), Ryan and I picked out a beautiful diamond wedding band and that was that. We slowly started to make plans for how we would get married.
We always knew we wanted to keep it private, something that would be just the two of us. We love weddings, but we didn’t think it made sense for us and our personalities. We tend to be very private about the love we have and how we share it. What I respect most about Ryan is that he is almost never the center of attention and nothing makes him more uncomfortable than being center stage. It was important to us that we stay true to who we really are in our everyday lives and keep our respect for each other sacred by fulfilling this vow without compromising each other’s sanity. So, City Hall it was. Announcing that decision to our families was next…
Ryan: Awkwardly. I walked around with the ring in my pocket for 3 days before finally proposing.
Why did you choose the Dream Downtown to help celebrate your special day?
Paige: We wanted to celebrate our marriage with a party in Manhattan where we live and we wanted it to be somewhere fun! I honestly looked at about 15 nightclub-style venues, but none compared to what PHD at the Dream Downtown had to offer and or compared to how well I vibed with their event coordinator Danielle Z. She completely understood what I wanted to accomplish: that it wasn’t a proper wedding, but rather a wedding celebration. She just got it and me and I felt really good about my choice.
Ryan: We wanted to find a space that represents what we think a marriage celebration should be, and a place that would allow us to celebrate with friends and family and interact in a setting that didn’t just necessitate going through the motions. We tried to keep the mood light and allow everyone to interact freely in more of a party atmosphere, so the Dream offered a great venue. Also, it’s always a nice feature to give guests the option to stay right in the hotel.
How would you describe your relationship in one word?
Paige: That’s really hard because I want to say trust, but we wouldn’t have any of that without respect, so I have to choose respect as our one word.
What was your favorite part of the wedding? Other than marrying the love of your life, of course!
Paige: Sharing it with our closest friends who love and support us so much! They made this decision so easy and fun. We would never have reached this point in our relationship if we did not have so many wonderful, understanding, patient friends encouraging us, helping us grow, and loving us so much through all of life’s challenges. We owe it all to them!
What moment will you remember forever?
Paige: For my 32nd birthday (after we had the wedding plans all set in place, signed, sealed, city hall date picked, PHD invitations sent out), Ryan surprised me with a trip to Paris, a city I have talked about traveling to since the moment we met. It had always been my dream trip that I had yet to take. He came home on my birthday with an entire itinerary all planned. It was first class all the way! We would leave the following week for the trip.
One evening in Paris, he planned for us to have dinner at Le Clinq at the Four Seasons Hotel in Paris. Needless to say, it was a fairytale setting. We were having the best time. After dessert, Ryan explained to me that he would love to have given me a whole big proper proposal, even though we said we weren’t going to do that, because he truly wanted that for me and thought I deserved an over-the-top gesture. Lots of other really loving things were said as he pulled out the most stunning engagement ring I have ever seen and got down on one knee. It was a total shock to me and I am still so shocked by the wonderful, thoughtful man I married.
