While scrolling through the SXSW mobile app something caught our attention…Could we really be able to talk to Astronauts in space? The space station via Skype! It was something we had to be a part of, so we jumped in a pedicab and headed over to the magic.
They started with some facts while the connection ran through to the space station (which only happened to be traveling at 17500 mph and 240 miles above the earth)
- A space station took 37 flights to bring up the components
- 174 space walks to build the station
- One space station in the world.
Oh. And we’re most likely going to see people live in mars this lifetime. Sounds pretty cool…..
Now from the astronauts themselves:
What does space smell like?
Wakata: I hope we don’t smell very much in the space station. When Rick [Mastracchio] and Mike [Hopkins] came back in from space, I could smell the scent from the vacuum. Other than that, we have really very good air ventilation and circulation.
What’s it like to sleep in space?
Hopkins: Sleeping up here is actually quite comfortable. In microgravity, there is no up or down. As for how we know when to go to bed, we’re on GMT time and we follow the clock.
We also found out that they had sleep pods with sleeping bags that they snuggle into…and the real question- Arms in, or out ?
