Every January, hundreds of thousands of people flock to Miami for Art Deco Weekend. The festival celebrates Miami Beach’s historic art deco architecture and features everything from live music to movie screenings to a fashion show. This year marks the 40th anniversary of Art Deco Weekend, which will run from January 13-15, 2017. Here at Dream South Beach we want to make sure you don’t miss out on the fun. Here’s our handy guide for planning your Art Deco Weekend in Miami and making sure you get the most of every aspect of this fabulous festival:
Travel back in time.
The heyday of art deco was from the 1920s through the 1940s, and during Art Deco Weekend, Miami Beach goes back in time to the Jazz Age. The area of Ocean Drive between 5th and 13th streets transforms into a Great Gatsby-era dreamland, with flappers, jazz music, parades, antique cars and more. Speaking of Gatsby, be sure to attend at least one of the festival’s screenings of Jazz-era films. Check the festival website for more information.
Become a history buff.
Celebrating history is the focus of the festival, and with more than 85 educational events, there are plenty of opportunities to learn something new – and have fun doing it. Take one of the walking tours offered all weekend to see the art deco sights up close. You can choose from several tour options to dive into a particular aspect of history or culture – organized crime, gay and lesbian, Jewish Miami, neon lights, and more.
If you really want to brush up on your art deco trivia, attend an event from the lecture series, which has a different theme every year and features dozens of expert speakers.
Dance like it’s 1925.
Art Deco Weekend features jazz and big band swing music on Friday evening and throughout the day on Saturday and Sunday. There are two main stages: one at 12th and Ocean and one at Lummus Park, just across the street from our property. Spread out a blanket to relax and listen, or keep an eye out for the South Florida Lindy Collective’s events for a chance to practice your retro swing moves.
Get some fashion inspiration.
Don’t miss the Art Deco Weekend Fashion Show on Saturday, January 14. Watch models strut their stuff on the runway in art deco-inspired clothing created by local designers, and decide which look you like the best. The show is one of the festival’s most popular events, so make sure to get there early to get a good spot.
Pick up some art of your own.
In-between cocktails, dancing and attending events, check out the vendors lining Ocean Drive. There are dozens of booths stocked with antiques, art, photography, vintage clothing and more fun souvenirs you can bring home to remember your weekend.
And, of course, as you’re planning your Art Deco Weekend experience in Miami, remember to book your stay at Dream South Beach. Just minutes away from the festival’s most exciting events as well as the beach, our hotel is the ideal home base for all your Miami adventures.
